Title: The Giver

Author: Lois Lowry

Genre: Speculative Fiction

Jonas lives in a Utopia and will soon find out that he will get a once in a lifetime opportunity. He gets the job of Receiver. The Receive holds the memories of the past. He finds out that some are painful, some are not. After school each day he has to go to his training with the Giver. When he finds out how the world was, he plans an escape and finds that it is a ride.

The theme is that Jonas’s world it is perfect, but what would it take to make our world perfect? They gave up color, feelings, weather, choice of jobs, and spouses. The author thinks that there needs to have a change. I think that they could have weather just not the sever weather. They could also choose their spouses because they don’t have feelings and won’t choose them for the rough reasons. They would choose them to live with, not for their body or their money.

I liked the second half of the book better than the first because he finds out how different his world from ours. I had predicted what release was and I was right. When he had to bike in the snow it reminded me how hard it sometimes is to walk in the snow at home. I would give it four stars because it was easy to read and it had some suspense and I would recommend it to sixth graders.
